Beer has been popular in Thailand for quite some time. Initially, the Thai beer market was limited, likely due to heavy import duties. This led Thai breweries to create their own distinctive products or brew local versions of well-known international beers.
Singha
Singha has been one of the most popular beers to come from Thailand and is the only widely popular beer that can be called uniquely Thai. Singha is exported all over the world. Other major players in the Thai market that brew locally include Chang, Tiger, and Heineken. These beers are based on recipes from other countries, though the flavor may be slightly altered to suit Thai tastes. Every November, Thai breweries come together to set up beer gardens and host events around Bangkok, creating a popular annual celebration.
Leo Beer
Made by the Boon Rawd Brewery, which also produces Singha Gold Light, Singha Draft, and Kloster Beer, Leo Lager is one of Thailand’s most popular beers and is exported worldwide and can be bought cheaper than its Singha cousin. It is a 5.5% full-flavored standard lager beer with a smooth and pleasant finish.
Chang Beer
This 5% beer has a distinctively smooth and refreshing taste with a golden yellow color. Chang, launched in 1994 as a joint venture between Carlsberg and a local Thai brewery, is very similar to Carlsberg, even sporting a familiar label design. Today, Chang holds the largest beer market share in Thailand.
