For many years, Taiwan’s beer market was dominated by a single brand: Taiwan Beer, produced by Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor, a state-run company that held a 99% market share due to strict import laws.
Today, the landscape is changing in Taiwan. In 1987, imported beer was allowed to be sold in the country, and by 2002, imported beer had captured a 30% market share, with Chinese beer being permitted the same year.
Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor has also evolved, introducing new marketing campaigns to attract younger drinkers and launching a premium beer known as Gold Medal Taiwan Beer.
Taiwan Beer
This 4.5% German-style pilsner remains the most popular beer in Taiwan. Efforts to export it to China were halted by Chinese copyright laws, which prohibit naming a product after a region of China. This is ironic, considering China’s Tsingtao Beer is named after a city in China. Taiwan Beer has been brewed since 1945 and has won several international beer awards in recent years. Approximately 35 million liters of Taiwan Beer are brewed each month.
Mine Beer
Mine Beer (stylised as M!NE All Malt Beer) is a relatively new entrant in the Taiwanese beer market, produced by a Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor, it aims to diversify the island’s beer offerings. With its unique blend of malt and hops, Mine Beer provides a refreshing alternative to more traditional beers. This 5% beer is known for its crisp taste and smooth finish, making it a popular choice among younger drinkers and those looking for something different. The brewery focuses on using high-quality ingredients and modern brewing techniques to ensure a consistent and enjoyable drinking experience.
Long Chuan Beer
Long Chuan Beer, another rising star in Taiwan’s craft beer scene, is renowned for its distinct flavors and artisanal brewing process. This beer is crafted with a commitment to quality, incorporating local ingredients to give it a unique Taiwanese twist. Long Chuan offers a range of beers, from light and refreshing lagers to more robust and flavorful ales. The brand has gained a loyal following among craft beer enthusiasts and is steadily making its mark in both local and international markets.
