Most people who visit Hong Kong come by plane and as it is one
of the major stop over points for several long haul
international flights, hundreds of flights stop at Hong Kong
each day and it is often in the top 20 busiest airports of the
world.
In 1998 a new airport was built on Chep Lap Kok island beside Lantau
Island, a massive project that saw Chep Lap Kok not only flattened
but also tripled in size. A huge road project also saw the new airport
connected to not only Lantau and Hong Kong island but also to Kowloon
which had several large city blocks reclaimed from the harbour in the
process.
Getting to and from the airport can be achieved by either taxi, bus or
the Airport Express railway that departs about every 5 min from central
Hong Kong. The fast speed of the Airport Express means the trip takes
about 20 min from the city and you can even check your bags in at a
terminal in the city enabling you to do some last minute city shopping.
Hong Kong is also the departure point and destination of the many cruise
liners that sail the Asian region. While it is possible to cross the
boarder from China into Hong Kong you will need a visa to get to China
in the first place as the visa rules are much stricter in China than in
Hong Kong.
